So You've Never Done Comedy Before And You'd Like To Try...

One of the most common questions the blog gets is some version of this:

“HEY! I’VE REALLY BEEN THINKING ABOUT DOING COMEDY. WHERE SHOULD I GO/WHAT VENUE IS THE BEST/WHERE’S A GOOD PLACE TO START/ETC...”
— someone who will be famous in 7 years/future sad dad/mind capable of being a serial killer/random norm

For a while I used to answer these questions very earnestly because when someone asks a question about something you really care about you want to give a good answer. You remember the things you did and the experiences you had and in some way you're trying to share those experiences or at the very least just be helpful. Then at some point, I sort of just stopped answering those emails. And here's why.

You are either going to do comedy, or you're not going to do comedy.

Every mid sized city whether it's Portland, Denver, Charlotte, Minneapolis or whatever has comedy and the people who end up doing comedy 100% of the time are the people who do comedy. Furthermore, anyone who has ever performed has experienced how unique it is to the human experience and how, at the end of the day, trying to prepare for it is sort of pointless.

If you haven't performed before and you want to than Google "Open Mic (your city) and you will find something. Better yet, if you're in the PDX area go to the Open Mics page and find something that sounds interesting. Seriously, pick anything. If you can only do mics on Sunday, pick a mic on Sunday. If you're under 21, go to a mic that's all ages (they do exist). If you're under 21 and you live in the PDX area go to a mic, sign up, and wait outside until you can perform and go straight to the stage (bars don't like it, but they legally have to let you perform).

At the risk of sounding like a shit head, this is ultimately your journey. Once you start literally dozens of opportunities/ideas will pop out in front of you and you'll wonder why you waited so long to start. So yeah that's it. Have fun, and for the love of god don't be a dipshit.
